I get it! You’ve been playing around with the idea of starting your own blog! You may even feel God calling you to do it. Well, you’re not alone and you’ve come to the right place. This blog is going to teach you what you need foundationally to get started with your very own blog this year! It is not too late to build out those dreams of yours and yes, a blog is the perfect form of expression to not only get your point across to others, but to showcase YOU! (Which we all need more of)
Now before we get started into the practical steps that you need to start a blog. Let’s talk a little about the world of blogging…..
According to Master Blogging (insert link), 83 % of internet users read blogs. That’s roughly 4.4 billion blog readers across the world! Talk about a way to impact nations! By no means is blogging dead in 2026. I’ve been looking at blogs since 2016 and they are still going strong today! In addition to this, approximately 70% of consumers prefer blog posts compared to advertisements when it comes to learning more about a company. Your blog could take you and your business from ordinary, all the way to extraordinary
Now let’s get into what you clicked on this blog for- how to actually start your blog:
STEP 1: Choose Your Niche
The word niche gets tossed around so much, but essentially your niche is your area of specialty or main topic. Think of your niche as being a tree and your actual blog posts are the fruit that hang off of your tree. Both, of course, have to be related. There are SO many topics to choose from. For example, you could choose beauty, fashion, electronics, cooking, business, homemaking, photography. You name it there’s a niche for it. See the graphic below for a more extensive list of blog niches to choose from with the top niches being listed at the top.
If you’re unsure about which niche to choose, I encourage you to pray about it and follow the Lord’s leading towards which niche is set apart for you.

STEP 2: Choose Your Domain Name
Now that you know where you want to host your website, it’s time to pick out a perfect domain name! If you already have a business that your blog will be attached to then you’re already ahead of the game. You can easily add a blog to your already running website depending on who your website builder is.
For those who are fresh in the game, picking out a domain name can be a challenge. Me, personally, this blog name was given to me by God. He helped to create the entire vision for what you see here and He is able to do that with you also!
Another practical way to find a domain name is to use a Domain Name Generator such as this one to get ideas on a name that’s perfect for you. Within this step it’s also important to search your chosen domain name to make sure it’s available, essentially your exact domain name has to be specific to you and cannot be shared with anyone else in the world. By choosing a name with a .com address, you increase the likely of your business being able to be discovered by visitors versus using .net or .org which are not as popular.
These are some of the top domain search tools:
STEP 3: Write 5-6 Foundation Posts
Before you begin to promote your blog, you want to build a strong base of articles that showcase what your blog is about. These posts serve as the backbone of your blog by bringing in your initial traffic, building traffic, and telling us who you are! This is also a great chance for you to play around and determine what you like to talk about versus topics that don’t come natural to you.
Tip- In order to rank faster on Google, each post should answer ONE specific question that your ideal reader has.
STEP 4: Choose a Platform That Will Grow With You
A platform is essentially a website builder. It supplies you with the necessary infrastructure needed to manage your website. You want to choose the platform that can grow with you and best help you to accomplish your future dreams.
There are 2 different types of platforms to choose from:
- “Owned” Platforms (best for long-term)
- WordPress
2. “Rented” Platforms (easier to start with but limiting)
- Wix
- Squarespace
While starting off with a rented platform can be the easiest for beginners, if you are looking for long term growth with the ability to have monetization freedom, better SEO control, and full ownership of your blog and content, choosing an owned platform like WordPress will be your best option.
STEP 5: Select your Hosting
What is hosting?
A web host is a provider that offers the service of “hosting” your website. They provide the technology software necessary to host a website on the internet. Can you get away without a host? Absolutely, but you need a great level of expertise in order to be able to do it. Without having a web host, you run the risk of security crashes to your website and web pages that run slowly. All things we don’t want! A host helps to keep your website files nice and organized so that visitors can easily find you.
Hosting Options:
My personal used one and the top leading host in the industry is BlueHost (insert link). With affordable monthly and yearly plans, Bluehost take the cake with their beginner friendly tools and 24/7 customer support. They also offer domain name registration with access to WordPress and WooCommerce.
You can also use Siteground as your website host!
STEP 6: Design Your Website
This part of starting a blog is so fun!
Your blog theme (design) should be something functional and easy to read, rather than solely aesthetics. Before picking your theme, consider these 3 things: Clarity, Readability, and Conversion.
- Clarity- people instantly understand what you do and who you are
- Readability- visitors can easily navigate your site and it’s not overwhelming
- Conversion- visitors turn into followers/subscribers
My current theme is from 17th Avenue Themes- it offers a clean, minimal layout, mobile optimization, fast loading pages, and easily customizable sections. Check it out here: 17th Avenue Themes !
STEP 7: Legalities
There are so many legal things to consider when deciding to start a blog. If you are not familiar with internet laws, it can be a daunting task to learn everything and make sure that your blog is set up the right way.
To easily put it, you want your website to be compliant with the standards that respect user rights regarding accessibility, security, data privacy, and access to information. While these rules can be different depending on your location and what your website is used for, you do need to use these legal pages which can be found in a Privacy Policy:
- GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
- CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act)
Create your own Privacy Policy here: https://www.freeprivacypolicy.com/
A Disclaimer legally protects you based on the type of content you write. For example, if you blog about health and lifestyle advice you will need a Disclaimer that states your content is for informational purposes only and not medical, professional, or legal advice.
Another policy you will want to have is an Affiliate Disclosure if you earn money from any of the links posted on your website.
Here are a few other legal disclosures that you will want to add to your blog as well:
Terms and Conditions– outlines your rights as the owner of your blog and limitations of liability
Copyright Basics– protects your blog content
CALOPPA (California Online Privacy Protection Act)
COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act)
ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)
EU Cookie Law and Cookie Consent Notice
